LG Electronics Introduces Plasma Video Display for Home Theatre Chic

Sleek, slim screen can be mounted on the wall – saving space and adding decorative flair

LG Electronics, recognized as the world’s leader in Plasma display technology, has announced the retail launch of Plasma Display Panels for the home. The sleek design, slim styling and ability to show High Definition television, satellite and DVD images means consumers can now experience big-screen theatre picture in the comfort of their own home.

LG Plasma screens are the slimmest and lightest on the market with an average depth of three to four inches and weighing between 33 kg and 70 kg.

Plasma Display Panels offer many advantages over conventional big-box television sets including flicker-free, clear-focused images which can be seen from any angle up to 160° since the completely flat screen means there is no degradation or distortion of images – from any viewing direction.

“LG believes in making people’s lives easier – and more enjoyable; the quality of the picture, and the design of this display truly deliver on that vision,” said Soon Kwon, President LG Electronics Canada. “The extensive technological research and development behind the manufacturing of LG Plasma screens means we oversee every step of their creation allowing us to assure the highest quality in standard and performance. It’s a little bit of luxury that transforms any room into a home theatre.”

THE COMFORTS OF HOME
The popularity of home theatre takes the concept of cocooning to a new level. Consumers are quickly adopting the latest technological developments to create luxury hide-aways at home and to perfect the digital lifestyle. DVD sales are up 74 per cent over last year and Plasma screens are already in consumer demand – for the month of May Plasma screen shipments increased 290 per cent compared to January this year. The home theatre provides a great way for families to share in the entertainment experience and provides another reason to bring friends together for movie nights at home.

“We’re seeing an increasing number of consumers who want the privacy and convenience of home theatre and are willing to invest in the luxury of having the highest quality audio visual systems in their homes,” said Chris Truscott, Sales and Marketing Manager, LG Electronics Canada. “Advances in the use of Plasma technology and the slim, space-saving styling of our Plasma panels has allowed us to provide a near flawless viewing experience that fits perfectly in any home environment from condos to large custom home theatres.”

BETWEEN THE SCREENS
Plasma technology has enabled the development of flat panel displays with excellent image quality and large screen sizes viewable in any environment. They have a very simple construction. The panels are made of two thin sheets of glass stacked one on top of the other. A gas in plasma state is pumped into the space between the sheets of glass, and when voltage is applied to it, the gas reacts to light up to light up either red, green or blue colour in the sub-pixels. Each sub-pixel produces more than 16 million different colors. With the simple addition of a television tuner or a connection to the computer, DVD player or satellite, the Plasma screen projects perfect images that are easily viewable in a display less than 6 inches thick.

LG owns and operates the world’s second largest assembly plant dedicated to Plasma. The plant will produce 300,000 plasma screens this year alone and up to 1.5 million plasma screens by 2005.

The LG Electronics Plasma Panel is available now in 60-inch, 50-inch, 42-inch and 40-inch models at retail outlets across Canada and are priced from $8,499 to $25,999 CDN.
