B&W Unveils Compact Custom Theater Lineup; CT800-Series Addition

Downsized Range Retains True Reference Performance

North Reading, MA—September 2007— Bowers & Wilkins’ Custom Theater lineup, which brought the world-standard performance of B&W’s 800-series Nautilus™ designs to high-end custom-installed home theaters, created quite a stir upon its introduction two years ago. Now the British maker will unveil a new, more widely accessible Custom Theater lineup at the 2007 CEDIA Expo in Denver, Colorado. B&W’s CT700 Custom Theater lineup is more modest in enclosure size, and considerably more modest in price than the frankly cost-no-object Custom Theater 800 range—yet it delivers precisely the same kind of jaw-dropping sonic impact, timbral and dialog integrity, and sonic transparency as its larger siblings.

The CT700 comprises three different front/surround-channel options, 10-inch and 12-inch subwoofers, plus an outboard, rack-mounted subwoofer amplifier of 1,000 watts. All five 700-series loudspeaker elements are finished in a durable matte black, being intended for custom-installed concealed locations behind acoustically transparent screens, in custom cabinetry, or built into custom theater partitions. (To facilitate such designs, maximum depth of all CT700 models is 10.5 inches.)

The new CT700 models uniformly employ B&W’s well-known, proprietary woven-Kevlar® materials technology in their midrange and low-frequency drivers. There, its unique acoustic properties inhibit unwanted vibrations, for impressive freedom from the colorations that degrade transparency and realism.

To eliminate reflections from projectors or other bright light sources all cones in the CT700 models utilize Blue Kevlar. Similarly, all CT700 models (save the subs) employ B&W’s famous Nautilus™ tube-loaded tweeter design to absorb the unwanted back wave from their high-frequency drivers, greatly promoting clarity and detail, as well as its FlowPort™ turbulence-canceling cabinet vents for improved bass definition and dynamic agility.

There are three options for CT700-series front and surround channels. The CT7.3 LCRS is a three-way layout using dual 8-inch Kevlar woofers, a 6-inch Kevlar midrange, and 1-inch cloth-dome, Nautilus-loaded tweeter. The two-way CT7.4 LCRS employs dual 6-inch Kevlar mid/bass drivers with the same tweeter system, while the generally similar CT7.5 LCRS substitutes a single 7-inch Kevlar mid/bass unit. All three CT700 variants are rigorously engineered for precisely matching timbre and overall transient and dynamics characteristics, so that a system may be freely laid out between any combination of models.

The 700-series Custom Theater subwoofers are compact, closed-box designs to facilitate installation in cabinetry or partitions. The CT SW12 utilizes a single very long-throw 12-inch driver composed of a paper/Kevlar composite, while the CT SW10 is proportionately identical using a 10-inch cone. Both CT700 subs are intended for use with their new companion, the SA1000 Subwoofer Amplifier. This deceptively compact (2U rackmount) unit less than 4 inches tall and barely 17 pounds in weight nonetheless produces an astounding 1,000 watts of subwoofer-range power, thanks to its ultra-efficient ICEpower™ Class D amplifier design. The SA1000 also incorporates extensive crossover flexibility, including equalization custom-tailored to the CT700 woofers, delivering deep-bass extension all the way to 18 Hz (CT SW12). Designers may easily specify multiple subwoofers, using each SA1000 to power as many as two units.

All of the Custom Theater CT700 models are supplied in matte black finish, with acoustically transparent, magnetically affixed grilles.

Also at Denver’s CEDIA 2007, Bowers & Wilkins will simultaneously introduce a new addition to the Custom Theater 800 series. Like its forbearers, the new CT8.4 LCRS, incorporates the legendary technologies of B&W’s 800 Series stand-alone speakers to achieve literally reference-standard performance. The CT8.4 LCRS packs the power to function excellently in front-, side- and rear-channel duties within a complete 800-series custom system. It is also a more compact alternative to the range’s CT8 DS side/rear channel speaker for use where space is at a premium. The CT8.4 LCRS’ 8-inch Kevlar/paper woofer, 6-inch woven-Kevlar FST midrange, and 1-inch aluminum Nautilus-loaded tweeter yield precisely the same authentically three-dimensional listening experience as its larger siblings.

B&W’s newest Custom Theater models will be available from October 2007, at the following manufacturer’s suggested prices:

CT7.3 LCRS $1,500
CT7.4 LCRS $1,000
CT7.5 LCRS $600
CT SW10 $tba
CT SW12 $tba
SA1000 Subwoofer Amplifier $tba

CT8.4 LCRS (Custom Theater 800 Series) $4,000

Bowers & Wilkins Brings 800 Series Technologies to an All New 600 Series

British Firm's Best-Selling Line Gains Important Performance Upgrades, Cosmetic Refinements

North Reading, MA—May 2007— B&W Loudspeakers, the British manufacturer recognized internationally as one of the world's leading sources of loudspeaker technology, has launched the fourth generation of its hugely popular 600 Series. Incorporating technologies from the firm's reference-standard 800 Series, the improvements represent a significant step forward in this price class.

"Applying much of our latest, most sophisticated technologies to our most accessibly priced products has long been a B&W design goal," says Doug Henderson, VP of Sales and Marketing. “We have proven over the years that the way to create new customers for our higher end products is to give them as much as we can at the entry level. The brand loyalty this creates is exceptional.”

Continuing, Henderson says, “In the case of our newest 600 Series models we have really pushed the limits of practical and cost constraints to emphasize what the brand is all about: advanced technology in the service of music, at all price levels. In fact, for many of us, hearing the results of leading-edge B&W technology working in our more affordable speakers is really the biggest thrill of all."

Each time the Bowers & Wilkins Steyning Research Establishment undertakes a redesign of the 600 Series they understand fully that they must produce something of a minor miracle in order to best their own previous standard.

Through three generations, they have raised the bar successively on what could be accomplished in modestly priced loudspeakers—each time achieving greater worldwide critical acclaim and commercial success.

While every price tier has its unique challenges, markedly improving performance within the necessary constraints of a limited budget is perhaps the toughest challenge of all. With the latest 600 models, Bowers & Wilkins is proud to say that their colleagues at Steyning have done just that. These new models testify to the remarkable pool of talent and resources that makes Bowers & Wilkins a singular global brand.

Call it the Six-Eight Series

The new 600 Series is nothing less than a complete top to bottom redesign, incorporating many of the leading edge technologies developed for the flagship 800 Series, with truly startling results for the price class. The line has been focused down to fewer models to suit current market requirements, each model having obvious “best in class” appeal. New finishes and more contemporary, refined cosmetics complete the package.

The reason behind the tremendous value offered by the new 600 Series is that Bowers & Wilkins has made a significant investment in a new purpose-built factory in China. To clarify: These are not OEM-sourced products! Bowers & Wilkins factory managers and engineers have spent more than two years supervising construction of this first-class manufacturing plant and training the operating staff. It is Bowers & Wilkins owned and managed with state-of-the-art production lines. In contrast to the many other companies that have moved production to third-party vendors in China to decrease costs at the expense of quality, Bowers & Wilkins ambition here was to put more content in the product at this price level. The results speak for themselves.

Bowers & Wilkins Flagship Technology Made Affordable.

Starting at the top, the new 600 Series Nautilus™ tube-loaded tweeter has been completely redesigned. A powerful new neodymium magnet replaces the ceramic magnet used in the past. The tweeter’s smaller size allows it to be placed closer to the midrange driver for more seamless integration and vertical dispersion, with resulting improvements in imaging. The new tweeter also makes use of single layer, edge-wound ribbon voice coil wire, and a copper plate on the pole piece. These techniques put more copper in the voice-coil gap, increase efficiency, lower distortion and extend the high frequency response. The tweeter also makes use of rolled-surround technology, which allows greater frequency extension before break-up. Braided lead-out wires from the diaphragm improve reliability, and a new surround material achieves a lower resonant frequency, with the net result of wider overall bandwidth and power handling. Compared with 600 S3 tweeters, the response has more than doubled, to 50 kHz, putting any distortion well outside the audible range.

The Kevlar® bass/midrange units developed for this range utilize a fixed center “bullet” piece that improves smoothness and dispersion in the upper frequencies. High quality, die-cast driver baskets are employed to minimize chassis resonance and rear wave turbulence. The 683 and the HTM61 center have the added benefit of the FST™ (Fixed Suspension Transducer) midrange pioneered in the Nautilus™ 800 Series. This breakthrough design has proven unequaled for midrange clarity and dynamics.

The 683’s twin woofers have been given an increase in magnet diameter from 100mm to 120mm, to provide higher sensitivity and tighter bass. The cone material used here consists of dual layers of aluminum and paper/Kevlar®, in a technique known as constrained layer damping, to reduce cone breakup and lower distortion. The woofer chassis is die-cast and features an open design with rounded support legs to reduce viscous drag.

The many driver refinements have allowed Bowers & Wilkins to employ minimalist first-order crossovers, like those in the 800 Series, built of premium quality components that were selected through extensive listening tests. Fewer components of higher quality translate directly to less signal degradation, with improvements in every aspect of performance.

Cabinet construction has also been improved by increasing the baffle thickness by 30%. This strengthening provides a better mechanical foundation for the bass driver(s), and reduces panel bending at higher volumes. The benefit is better bass definition.

Immediately noticeable are the many enhancements to the look and feel of the new models. Soft-touch baffle paint, screw-less driver trim rings, and an elegant diamond cut logo on a brushed aluminum surface, all give an amazingly high quality feel to such a reasonably priced range.

A Shorter, More Focused Line-up.

The latest 600 range has been streamlined to provide you with a full range of choices for both home theater and music system applications.

686 -- $450/pair. The new entry level model is a very compact (10.4” x 6.7” x 9.8” HWD) two-way vented design with a 5” Kevlar® bass/midrange driver and a 1” Nautilus™ tube-loaded aluminum dome tweeter. A remarkably solid performer that will challenge much larger designs, the 686 will sit happily on a bookshelf or stand, and comes with a wall bracket as well.

685 -- $600/pair. In a somewhat larger enclosure, with a 6.5” Kevlar® cone bass/midrange driver and the 1” Nautilus™ tube-loaded tweeter, the 685 is simply the best value bookshelf Bowers & Wilkins has ever made, replacing the 601S3 and the 602S3 with one elegant package.

684 -- $1,000/pair. Next up in the range is a two-and-half-way, vented-box, floorstander that features two new 6.5” Kevlar® cone bass/midrange drivers. The 684 is easily best in class at this price point, with a transparent, dynamic presentation. Its sophisticated cosmetic detailing and slim profile give it strong visual appeal.

683 --$1,400/pair. At the top of the new 600 Series is an impressive floor standing speaker. The 683 is a true three-way vented-box system with two high power, low distortion 6.5” aluminum bonded to paper/Kevlar® bass drivers. The first of the 600 series to receive the coveted 6” FST™ midrange driver, the 683 is rounded out with the same 1” aluminum tweeter and Nautilus™ housing.

Home Theater Takes Center Stage.

While the new 600 models are superb music reproducers, particular attention has been paid to the home theater aspects of the range.

HTM62 -- $400/each. HTM61 -- $600/each. Bowers & Wilkins provides two system-matching options for the all important center channel position. The first, the HTM62, is a two-way vented-box system with dual 5” Kevlar® bass/midrange drivers and a 1” Nautilus™ tube-loaded aluminum tweeter. The more potent HTM61 increases the SPL capability of the system with a true three-way vented-box system comprising one 6.5” Kevlar® bass/midrange, a 6” FST Kevlar® midrange, and a 1” Nautilus™ tube-loaded aluminum tweeter. The HTM61’s performance is simply amazing and offers a clear step-up opportunity.

To handle deep bass duties there are three new subwoofers that offer very compact dimensions and stylish cosmetics, yet really deliver the goods sonically. Each uses rugged driver cones formed from a precise mix of paper pulp, Kevlar® fibers and resin.

Two hundred watt Class D ICEpower® amplifiers provide clean, fast power while remaining cool and ultra-solid cabinet construction keeps the sound free from coloration even during the most demanding passages.

ASW608 -- $450/each. ASW610 -- $600/each. ASW610XP -- $1,000/each. First in the subwoofer line-up is the ASW608, with a long excursion 8” bass driver and retailing for $450. The output capability of this quite small design is -6dB at 25Hz, from an enclosure measuring only 10.2” x 10.2 x 13”! In the middle spot is the ASW610 with a robust 10” bass driver on a footprint only slightly larger (12.2” x 12.2” x 14.8”). Once again, Bowers & Wilkins achieves more output from a smaller enclosure. The ASW610 provides an excellent -6dB at 20Hz and sets a new benchmark for a modestly priced sub. For the largest theaters employing the 600 Series models, the ASW610XP is the perfect match. It features a superb new 10” driver driven by two 200W Class D ICEpower® amplifiers connected to its dual voice coils. This technique provides greater control and extension, to a truly impressive 18Hz, and is part of the reason the ASW610XP is Bowers & Wilkin’s best subwoofer effort yet at $1,000 retail.

DS3/CDS3 -- $400/each. To finish off the 600 Series home theater packages, Bowers & Wilkins has upgraded their very popular DS3 on-wall surround speaker, as well as its recessed cousin, the CDS3. Sharing all the new technologies developed for the range, this is a selectable dipole/monopole design with a 5” Kevlar® bass/midrange driver, two 3” midrange/ tweeters and the new 1” tweeter.

Finishes and Availability.

The new 600 Series will be available initially in two premium finishes: black ash and red cherry. A third finish, the very popular wenge, will be added later this year.

Bowers & Wilkins will begin shipping the 600 Series in two phased launches.

Phase I – Available June 1, 2007. Shipments will focus on music systems, with the top of the range 683 and the two bookshelf models, the 686 and 685. Also at this time the HTM62 center channel, CDS3 recessed surround, and DS3 on-wall (black only) will ship. As noted, finishes available initially will be black ash and cherry with wenge to follow later in the year.

Phase II – Available July/August 2007. Bowers & Wilkins will add the 684, HTM61, ASW608 and ASW610. The ASW610XP will follow these models 30 to 60 days later. About Bowers & Wilkins

Taking In-Car Entertainment to New Heights

Exclusive collaboration reveals exciting audio entertainment innovations

Detroit MI - January 8, 2007 - Jaguar’s new C-XF concept car, unveiled at the Detroit Motor Show, features next generation audio solutions from renowned sound expert Bowers & Wilkins. Emphasizing the company’s reputation for audio excellence and innovation, Bowers & Wilkins’ first foray into the automotive entertainment arena reveals a range of technologies, materials and techniques, many of which make their debut.

Applying over 40 years of experience to the challenges of achieving great sound in the automotive environment, Bowers & Wilkins’ engineers have developed a unique in-car audio system, featuring Micro-Matrix speaker panels, ‘Bass Beam’ low-frequency driver technology, Kevlar® cone midrange speakers, diamond-dome tweeters, selective-directivity arrays in the rear passenger compartment, and a rear deck panel featuring a full complement of bass and wide-dispersion drivers.

Within the C-XF concept car, Bowers & Wilkins demonstrates a clear understanding of the challenges in reproducing sound effectively in-car, combining high-performance materials and technologies and integrating them into the Jaguar’s luxury interior. “The in-car environment is very complex,” says Martin Lindsay, Senior Business Development Manager at Bowers & Wilkins Automotive. “Restricted space, differing materials, and the need to satisfy multiple entertainment needs pose unique and often conflicting requirements.” Bowers & Wilkins has been involved in the concept car’s development from the start, and each element of the system has been devised using technologically-advanced concepts aimed at ensuring the best possible sound experience throughout.

This collaboration marks the beginning of Bowers and Wilkins’ relationship with Jaguar and selected partners to develop and deliver next-generation premium audio solutions. The system created for the Jaguar C-XF attests to Bowers & Wilkins’ acoustic expertise and signals the company’s commitment to bringing audio innovations to the car. “We recognise that consumers demand high-quality sound reproduction in their cars as well as in their homes,” continues Lindsay. “Achieving great sound in the car is viewed as the latest technological challenge for us, and we look forward to realising next-generation sound systems that set new standards for in-car entertainment.”

Bowers & Wilkins’ custom ‘audio concept’ system includes:

Jewel-like front and rear speaker panels utilizing patented Micro-Matrix material, designed to deliver improved stiffness and damping properties. The material adds strength, avoids vibration and makes a good use of the limited space typically available in the interior of the car.

‘Bass Beam’ low-frequency driver components, mounted in the doors, promoting structural integrity and superior audio imaging. Finding an ideal space for subwoofers in the car has always been problematic. This innovative design makes incorporation within the car’s doors possible and provides an optimal implementation for the achievement of forward stereo imaging and concentrated ‘up front’ bass.

Incorporation of Kevlar® cone drivers in the dashboard and doors, designed to achieve smoother response throughout its frequency range. The end result is that these speakers deliver more fine detail to the listener and eliminate off-axis tonal-balance problems.

Diamond-dome tweeters combined with award-winning Nautilus technology deliver unmatched high-frequency performance. The elements in the C-XF are taken from Bowers & Wilkins critically-acclaimed 800 Diamond Series loudspeakers. The tapered Nautilus™ tube is now replaced by a compact, spiral version which damps unwanted reflections from the rear side of the tweeter element.

Selective-Directivity arrays under DSP control accurately direct full-range audio, creating improved clarity for back seat passengers while avoiding driver distraction. These components help achieve the goal of soundstage optimization in response to changing passenger entertainment needs. These can be used to cover all listening conditions. For multichannel surround entertainment, these drivers help to deliver a seamless presentation front to rear.

Rear deck panel designed to create an even sound experience with a central-mounted bass driver and two flanking wide-dispersion drivers.

Bowers & Wilkins Bows New VM6 speaker

North Reading, MA — January 2007 — Britain’s B&W Loudspeakers, known worldwide for its benchmark speakers for high-end audio and home-theater systems, has introduced a new, audio/video application loudspeaker, the VM6.

According to Chris Browder, B&W’s Executive Vice President, “The overwhelming popularity of flat panel TVs has created much demand for slim, stylish loudspeakers. Unfortunately, these same design criteria consequently limit many speakers’ performance, due mainly to internal volume constraints. At B&W, our engineers did a great job of solving the challenges posed by these constraints”

Bowers and Wilkins was among the first to enter this audio-for-video category with the introduction of the extremely successful VM1 speaker in 2002.  The VM1’s hit the industrial design “bulls-eye” with flowing curved lines and minimal cabinet depth. The real challenge, of course, was to deliver an acoustic performance worthy of the B&W moniker.  Thanks to the innovative engineers at B&W’s Steyning research institute the VM1’s accomplished the task and set new performance standards in the category.

While the VM1’s continue to be very successful, there is a need for an even higher performing product in this category. Enter the VM-6. The VM-6 is a two-way, ported, wall-mount or stand-mount design, which can be placed in either a vertical or horizontal position. The wall bracket and table-top stand are unique in that they are first wired with speaker cables and then the speaker is slid into the bracket or stand to provide contact for the audio signals. This allows for tidy cable routing, which keeps the installation clean and modern.  The wall bracket also provides for some side-to-side swiveling to increase the available listening angles.

VM-6 incorporates many of B&W’s heralded innovations including a one-inch aluminum dome Nautilus™ tweeter with tapered-tube technology, and a five inch Kevlar® cone bass/midrange driver that delivers solid bass down to 49Hz (-6dB). These driver elements are based on the same designs found in B&W’s remarkable CM-1, which won the coveted EISA (European Imaging and Sound Association) award for speaker of the year 2006.

VM-6 speakers are available in black, pearl white, and silver finishes with complementary grill cloths of black (black finish), white (pearl white) and mid-grey (silver finish).

VM6 speakers have a suggested retail of $450 each.  They will be available in January 2007.
